Integration-First ERP Selection: The 10 Questions That Prevent Regret

2. What's the real cost and timeline difference between a standard connector and a custom build?

That gap alone should reorder a shortlist — a platform requiring custom middleware for a core connection (CMMS, parts inventory, flight ops) carries a materially different implementation cost than one shipping the connector out of the box.

3. Can the CMMS and ERP exchange data without a human moving it manually?

5. How does the platform handle EASA Part-IS information security requirements?

Data migration is where integration promises are tested first. Confirm the vendor's process for migrating technical records, historical work orders, and compliance documentation from the incumbent system, and confirm in writing that the operator retains full ownership and export rights to that data regardless of whether the relationship continues.
7. Does the vendor publish API documentation, or do you have to request it deal by deal?
A platform confident in its integration architecture publishes its API documentation openly. A platform that treats API access as a negotiated add-on is signaling that integration was not a design priority — it's a retrofit.
8. How does the ERP handle real-time versus batch data sync?
Some integrations sync nightly; others are real-time. For AOG situations, parts availability, and flight-ops handoffs, batch sync introduces a lag that can cost hours of turnaround time. Ask which specific data flows are real-time and which are batch, and confirm that matches operational reality, not marketing language.
9. Who is accountable when an integration breaks?
Multi-system environments create ambiguous failure ownership. Get a specific answer, in the contract, about support response time and accountability when a connector between the ERP and a third-party CMMS, parts-locator, or flight-ops tool fails.
10. Can the platform scale its integrations as the operation adds systems?
An operator's software stack grows — a new health-monitoring tool, a new parts marketplace connection, a new compliance platform. Ask whether the ERP's integration architecture is built to add connections incrementally, or whether every addition resets the clock to a multi-month custom build.
